BAPTISM
The Bible is the record of God’s thoughts, actions, and words. It was written by holy men under divine inspiration to serve as our source of doctrine, instruction, and correction. It does not change and is applicable in all cultures and contexts. Therefore, we look to it for our understanding about baptism:
WHY BAPTISM?
It is an essential part of the salvation process outlined in scripture.
1 Peter 3:21 – “…baptism doth also now save us…”
Mark 16:16 – “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved…”
Acts 2:38 – “…be baptized every one of you…”
WHAT IS BAPTISM?
Baptism is human obedience to the scripture. It is the physical act of dipping, plunging, or submerging a person completely in water.
HOW DOES BAPTISM WORK?
Just as Jesus Christ was buried in a physical tomb for three days, when a person is baptized, they are symbolically buried with Christ. While the outward person (flesh) is being buried in water, the inward person (spirit) is undergoing a supernatural process where God transforms or creates a clean heart within us. Sins are forgiven through repentance, but they are remitted (washed away forever to never be remembered) through baptism.
DO THE WORDS USED DURING BAPTISM MATTER?
Looking at scripture we see clearly that baptism was commanded and completed in the name of Jesus.
Acts 2:38 – “…be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins…”
Acts 8:16 – “…they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.”
Acts 10:48 – “…he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord…”
Add in the truth from a couple of overarching scriptures:
Acts 4:12 – “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”
Colossians 3:17 – “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus…”
When we see the clear instruction in scripture concerning baptism and we understand the power and beauty of this obedient step, the only question left is…
